Modifiers range from -4 to +4. A positive rating means the port exports this product. Any attempts to buy this product here gain the respective number as a bonus to the Streetwise roll, while any attempts to sell the product suffer a like penalty. A negative number means this product is imported here, so attempts to sell receive the bonus and attempts to buy suffer the penalty. Products with a modifier of 0 are not be listed at all.

An example port would look like this:
Port Savage: Fruit +2, Grains -2, Liquor +4, Lumber -4

The modifier also affects the number of cargo spaces that can be bought or sold at any time. Instead of the standard 2d6+3 spaces of “generic cargo” noted in the PotSM book, roll 1d6 for each type of cargo offered or requested and modify the result by the product’s modifier (inverted when selling cargo, so a negative rating grants a bonus and a positive rating inflicts a penalty).

Example: The Shooner Esmeralda arrives at Port Savage, carrying four cargo spaces of grains and two of tobacco (the remaining two spaces being devoted to rations and ammunition). Her captain rolls to see how much of his cargo he can sell and rolls a 3 for grains (modified to 5 due to the negative modifier) and a 1 for tobacco. So he can easily sell all of his grains, but only one space worth of tobacco. The captain now rolls his Streetwise to determine the price. He rolls a 7 for the grains. With the modifier that’s a 9. A raise! He can sell all of his grains at 600 poe per space, or 2400 poe in total. For the tobacco he rolls a 5. This simple success nets him 500 poe for the single space worth of tobacco Port Savage is willing to buy. The captain now has 2900 poe in his pocket.

Now, the captain wants to purchase some of the port’s famous wine (liquor). He rolls for the offered amount and gets a 5 (+4 modifier) There is currently more wine available than the Esmeralda can carry. For the price, the captain rolls his Streetwise again, and gets a 9. With the +4 modifier, that’s two raises! Each space full of wine only costs 300 poe, so the captain can fill up his hold (5 cargo spaces) for only 1500 poe.
